TREATMENT

EFFECTS OF THE TREATMENT
During treatment, healing begins to take place. Occasionally the original symptoms worsen for a few days, or there may be changes in appetite, sleep, bowel or urination patterns, or emotional state. These are signs that the acupuncture is starting to work. It is quite common with the first one or two treatments to have a sensation of deep relaxation or even mild disorientation immediately following the treatment. These pass within a short time, and never require anything more than a bit of rest to overcome.

WHAT ARE THE NEEDLES LIKE? DO THEY HURT?
FDA approved disposable needles are used; there is no risk of infection from the treatments. Acupuncture needles are so very thin and solid. The point is smooth (not hollow with cutting edges like a hypodermic needle) and insertion through the skin is not like the pain of injections or blood sampling. The risk of bruising and skin irritation is less than when using a hollow needle.

People experience acupuncture needling differently. Most patients feel only a little irritation, like the annoyance of a mosquito, as the needles are inserted; some feel no pain at all. Once the needles are in place, there is no pain.

ARE THERE ANY "DO'S AND DONT'S" FOR ME ON THE DAY OF A TREATMENT?
Yes. To receive greatest benefit from your treatments, the following guidelines are important:

  • Do not eat a large meal immediately before or after your treatment.
  • Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consume alcoholic beverages within 6 hours before or after the treatment.
  • Plan your activities so that after the treatment you can get some rest, or at least not have to be working at top performance. This is especially important for the first few visits.
  • Continue to take any prescription medicines as directed by your medical doctor. Substance abuse (drugs and alcohol) in the days prior to treatment will seriously interfere with the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments.
  • Remember to keep good mental or written notes of what your response is to the treatment. This is important for your doctor to know so that the follow-up treatments can be designed to best help you and your problem.
  • Be sure to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes on the day of treatment. Make sure to eat something light an hour or two before treatment
  • Avoid caffeine a few hours before treatment
  • Drink plenty of water before and after the treatment
  • Be sure not to work out before treatment
  • Treatment can last up to an hour and half, so plan accordingly
  • If you are pregnant, be sure to obtain a letter from your medical doctor stating that you can participate in acupuncture.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE TREATMENTS?

  • Most people feel either energized or relaxed after a treatment.
  • Often people fall asleep during the treatment.
  • Although rate of response varies from person to person, most people find relief from their symptoms right away.
  • All conditions involving pain are effectively treated with acupuncture. It's a therapy to train the body to adjust itself. Just like physical therapy, radiation therapy, or chemical therapy; multiple treatments are needed for the body to heal itself.
  • We ask that you carefully monitor how long your relief lasts, so that we can better customize your treatments. In some cases, your symptoms may initially worsen before they get better. In such cases, the symptoms usually only worsen for a few hours before they get better. However, if your symptoms are worse for more than 24 hours, you should contact us.
  • The specific number of treatments depends on the nature and severity of your condition.
